Meet Christine O’Hagan
Born in Manchester, England, Christine emigrated to New Zealand in 1975 before moving to Sydney in 1993 with her husband and two sons.
After attending local art classes, she developed a passion for oil painting, choosing to work deliberately and exclusively with this medium.
Her portraits have received recognition in Australian art competitions, including selection as a finalist in the 2010 Archibald Prize, the 2011 Portia Geach Memorial Award and the 2008 Archibald Prize Salon des Refusés.
A Passion for Portraiture
Christine’s passion for portraiture lies in capturing the individuality, character and emotion of her subjects. Working exclusively in oils, she combines realism, rich colour and meticulous attention to detail to create paintings that invite viewers to look closer and discover their own stories.
Her portrait of Australian singer Kate Ceberano was selected as a finalist in the prestigious 2010 Archibald Prize, recognising Christine’s talent for capturing personality and expression through portraiture.
The Story Behind the Paintings
“As an Artist I find the human face the most interesting subject to paint. In all my portrait works to date I have attempted to capture that one moment in time, using my favourite medium, Oil Paints paying great attention to the detail. I bring a level of realism to my works that I hope will make the viewer look longer at the subject, the colours used and the brush strokes and thus provide their own narrative.
I am continually experimenting with different techniques and subject matter in each work I undertake and to this end I feel my work will continue to evolve and develop as I progress on this long journey I have committed myself to.”
